Trauma Therapy
The Goal of trauma therapy is to help you get to a place where you can live life without feeling triggered at all times and to be able to live life to your fullest. We do this by working on some of these goals:
-
Understanding the impact of trauma
-
Reducing symptoms like flashbacks, anxiety, or depression
-
Regain a sense of safety and control
-
Improve your relationships and daily functioning
-
Rebuild trust in yourself and others
Some examples of who trauma therapy might be helpful for:
-
If you have experienced a single or multiple traumatic incidents
-
If you are a survivor of abuse, assault, war, neglect, family trauma
-
Individuals with childhood trauma, immigration trauma, adult trauma
-
Those affected by grief, loss, or crisis
My approach to trauma therapy:
I believe that developing a trusting relationship and a safe place in therapy is the first step. We do this by talking about things we can do in therapy, things you may need from or during therapy to feel safe. We discuss the concept of 'feeling safe' and work through that. Then, we may look at and understand how is this trauma impacting your daily life and work on giving you the tools to self regulate.
We work on implementing "in-vivo exposure therapy" . "In-vivo" means "real life", so in vivo exposure therapy involves discussing how your direct, real-world experiences that create a fear response can be confronted gradually. The goal of in vivo exposure therapy is to reduce fear and avoidance, to retrain the brain, and to build tolerance and emotional strength.
Throughout therapy, I may utilize a variety of methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Somatic Experiencing, Interal Family Systems (IFS) and if needed, Narrative Therapy.
Remember, through every step of your journey, you are in control of how fast or how slow to go and start with those things you are ready to work on.
